In feiner .Einleitung in das Neue Teftament' Bd. 2
S. 601 ff. 608 behauptet Zahn, Origenes fei der erfte ge-
wefen, der die Gemeinde-Engel Apoc. 1—3 für wirkliche
Engel gehalten habe. Er hat aber überfehen, dafs fchon
Tertullian diefe Auslegung befolgt hat. Sie war ihm fo
felbftverftändlich, dafs er in der Schrift de pudic. 14 von
dem .Engel der Kirche' fpricht, den Paulus verhöhnt
haben würde, wenn er dem im 1. Kor.-Briefe verdammten
Blutfchänder nachträglich doch verziehen hätte: dusit
igitur et de suo spiritu et de ecclesiae angelo et de
virtute domini — man beachte, dafs Tertullian den .Engel
der Kirche' in den Vers I Kor. 5,4 einfach einfchiebt —,
si qnod de consilio eomm pronuntiaverat, rescidit. An
einen korinthifchen Gemeinde-Vorfteher kann hier fchlech-
terdings nicht gedacht werden, fondern nur an den Engel
der Gemeinde. Uebrigens fei bemerkt, dafs die von
Zahn vertheidigte Deutung der Gemeinde-Engel auf die
Bifchöfe überhaupt keine ältere Tradition in der Kirche
für fich hat.
