I Introduction

If it might be generally stated that mission studies supported the practice of missions during the colonial period, then the ending of colonial missions included decisive consequences for mission studies and its established methods. Mission could no longer be defined as the sending of especially called and trained individuals from a Christian to a non-Christian context, and mission studies could not be the academic field which assisted that process. Missio Dei provided a theological opening beyond this narrow definition.
